How It Works, And What It Can't Do
HA is a glycosaminoglycan — a large sugar-based molecule found naturally in skin, joints and eyes. Applied topically it acts as a humectant: it binds water and holds it in the upper layers, where hydrated skin looks plumper and reflects light more evenly.
The one rule that actually matters
A humectant holds water; it does not stop water leaving. Those are different jobs, done by different kinds of ingredient.
So HA needs water to work with — hence damp skin — and something on top to slow evaporation — hence moisturiser. A humectant serum on dry skin with nothing over it is the least effective way to use one.
And a limit worth stating. The plumping is water. It is real, visible and useful — and it is temporary and superficial. HA hydrates skin; it does not rebuild collagen or change structure, and fine lines that look softer are lines that were being exaggerated by dehydration. That is a genuine benefit honestly described.
HA vs Sodium Hyaluronate
A label distinction that confuses people constantly, and it is simple.
Most products advertising "hyaluronic acid" actually contain sodium hyaluronate — the sodium salt of HA. It is more stable in formulation, more soluble, and smaller, which makes it the practical choice for skincare. Seeing sodium hyaluronate on an ingredient list is not a substitution or a cost-cutting measure; it is usually the better material for the job.
You will also see hydrolysed hyaluronic acid (broken into smaller fragments) and sodium acetylated hyaluronate (modified to be more substantive on skin). All belong to the same family. None of these names by itself tells you how much is in the bottle, which is the part that actually determines whether a product does anything.
Molecular Weight, Honestly
The standard account is that high molecular weight sits on the surface and low molecular weight penetrates deeper, with deeper implied to be better. The first half is broadly right. The second half needs care.

Smaller is not automatically better
Research on hyaluronic acid biology associates very low molecular weight fragments with pro-inflammatory signalling — in the body, HA fragmentation is part of how tissue signals damage. This is not a reason to avoid low molecular weight HA in cosmetics, where it is widely used without issue. But it is a reason to be sceptical of "the smallest molecule wins" marketing, and a genuine argument for multi-weight blends over chasing ever-lower weights.
How To Apply It
- Damp skin, straight after cleansing. Do not dry your face fully first — a humectant works with the water available to it, and skin still wet from the tap is the easiest source there is.
- A few drops, spread quickly. More product does not hold more water; you are limited by what is there to hold.
- Moisturiser immediately after — this is the step that matters. Without it, the water you just attracted evaporates over the next hour and you have gained little.
- Morning and evening, both fine. No sun sensitivity, no waiting period, no conflict with anything else in your routine.
- In air conditioning, the sealing step matters more. Dehumidified air pulls water from skin continuously — an unsealed humectant layer stands little chance against it.
Claims Worth Questioning
"Holds 1000 times its weight in water"
A real measurement of HA in solution in a laboratory — and not a statement about what happens on your face, where the amount in a formula, the water available and the surrounding humidity all govern the outcome. Treat it as a fact about the molecule, not a promise about the product.
"In dry air, HA steals water from your deeper skin"
Repeated everywhere and stated with great confidence. It is plausible in principle — a humectant with no water above it will draw from below — but evidence that it happens meaningfully at cosmetic concentrations is thin, and glycerin, a stronger humectant, is not accused of it.
Happily, the advice is identical either way. Apply to damp skin and seal, because a humectant needs water and unsealed water evaporates. You do not need the scare story to arrive at the right routine.
"HA plumps away fine lines"
It softens the appearance of lines that dehydration was exaggerating, which is genuine and visible. It does not affect lines with a structural cause — those relate to collagen and elastin, which a humectant does not touch. If your lines vanish after moisturising and return by evening, they were dehydration lines.
